Endangered Plant Species Protection

Endangered plant species are those plant species whose ability to survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities, such that the size of the population is so low that the species is at risk of extinction. The World Conservation Union lists 34,000 plants as threatened with extinction. Although hard to calculate, about 400 plant species appear to have gone extinct from human activities. Plants become endangered predominantly through habitat loss and degradation and competition with exotic species. Climate change may accelerate these losses.
