In certain northern coastal regions such as Alaska and northern Russia, the Steller Sea Lion is near the top of the marine food chain. Its widely varied diet includes walleye pollock, Alka mackerel, Pacific salmon species, herring, capelin, Pacific cod, rockfish, sculpins, invertebrates such as squid and octopus, some semi-freshwater fish like white sturgeon, and very occasionally fur seals, harbor seals, and sea otter pups. Aside from man, the Steller's only natural predator is the killer whale.
