Definition
Sustainable aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants, in a way that does not impair the long-term ability of the environment to support these organisms and does not significantly harm the ecosystem. Aquaculture involves intervention such as regular stocking, feeding, and protection from predators to enhance production of these species for harvesting. It may require ecosystem conversion (e.g. mangroves to shrimp farms) and has led to invasive species, gene mixing, pollution from feeds, and the hunting of predators.
