Definition

Mountaintop removal (MTR) is a type of coal mining where the vegetation and topsoil are removed from a mountaintop and dynamite is used to blast away eight hundred to a thousand feet of mountaintop to reach a seam of coal for mining. The large quantities of debris removed from the mountaintop are dumped into nearby valleys with significant impacts on the environment.
