Conservation

Conservation is a very general concept covering the careful management of natural resources. It is commonly used to describe the careful management of ecosystems, watersheds, parcels of land, specific water bodies, species, even genomes. At times, it is also used to describe the careful management of museum specimens, art, historic buildings, and nonrenewable or scarce resources (e.g. water conservation).

The "Conserver Society" concept of the 1970s put forward a much more comprehensive and broader scope for the term "conservation". It placed the emphasis on creating a lifestyle and a society that used less resources, created less waste and pollution, and valued nature. Conservation is how we work to reduce our ecological footprint, and it includes social and economic design as well as the protection of natural ecosystems.
